Kolkata, the capital city of West Bengal state is known for its rich culture and history. It is one of the metropolitan cities of India. The history of Kolkata shows that how the city was once the capital of India under British rule. Formerly the city was called Calcutta. In some of the works of a Bengali Poet Bipradass of fifteen century, the city is mentioned as 'Kolikata'. In the late 17th century British ceased one of three villages where the Calcutta is located. The village called Kalikata was took under possession by the Britishers.

With the construction of 'Fort William' in 1698 by the British, the city started developing. Calcutta remained the capital of India from 1858 to 1912. During British rule, Kolkata was known as the 'Jewel of East'. When the “Seven Year's War” was broke out in 1754, the Fort William felt the major burnt of the war. British started repairing the Fort which eventually annoyed the Nawab of Bengal Siraj Ud Daulah. He then attacked Cossimbazar and Calcutta and took under his possession.
The history of Kolkata shows that the city played host to many revolutionary events and wars. In 1779, the city came up with its first newspaper called 'Hickey's Bengal Gazette'. In 1784 when the Asiatic Society was formed the city's intellectual life got big boost. In 1757, the British East India Company got the monopoly on production and export of opium. One of the major event took place in Kolkata when the Governor General of Bengal, Lord Curzon partitioned Bengal.
In 18th century Kolkata was the major trading center. The city become the center for Bengal Renaissance breeding one of India's reform movements. The city witnessed many historical events and political disorders during British time.
